1. How much water should you drink per day?

A minimum of ½ of your bodyweight in ounces. So, if you weigh 100 lbs you should be consuming at least 50 ounces per day. This number increases if temperatures are very hot and/or with engagement in physical activity.

  1. Does coffee, tea, sports drinks, etc. count towards your daily goal?

No. Water only!

  1. What are some common negative side-effects of being dehydrated?

Fatigue, poor decision making, focus, dizziness, cramps, decrease in athletic performance, headaches.

  1. What color should your urine be if you are properly hydrated?

Pale straw in color or transparent yellow.

  1. What about electrolytes? Should I be drinking Gatorade to replace electrolytes?

Electrolyte balance is very important to your overall health. When you sweat, you lose electrolytes which then need to be replenished. Drinks like Gatorade contain large amounts of sugar and are not a good choice. Consider using Amino Vital, Nuun, or Electrolyte Synergy instead. When in doubt, just drink more plain water!
